Sex stores gain new respectability

It has a department store-style layout, is clean and spacious and has a focus on professional sales service.
A high-end fashion retailer in the city? No, it’s an adult shop in the industrial suburb of Wangara where a wide range of what were once politely called marital aids can be purchased.
Gone are the days of single men in raincoats loitering in the aisles. Absolutely Adult store owner Mark Coleman said more and more customers now were couples and women who didn’t mind discussing the merchandise with sales staff.
“Most people are appreciative of being showed the various things and the advantage and disadvantages of one product against another,” said Mr Coleman, who owns a second store in Fremantle.
“You just need good sales staff who know the product and are able to do some sales pitching,” he said. “You can’t just sit back behind the counter and let people wander in any more.”
Rather than killing the bricks and mortar outlets stone dead, the adult shop industry says the internet has driven new customers – particularly women – through its front doors.
“They had been too frightened or too timid to go into an adult store,” Eros Association chief executive Fiona Patten said. “Then they saw some of the products online and that actually gave them some confidence to go into the stores.”
Ms Patten said that effect saw shop numbers increase five to 10 years ago. As well as new customers, investors were getting in on the act.
Since then, offline growth had been flat. She said while sales of DVDs and magazines had slumped by about 70 per cent at adult shops, sex toys and lingerie were going strong.
The stores had also diversified into herbal supplements, “social tonics”, tobacco and alternative smoking products. Ms Patten estimated the national market for bricks and mortar adult stores at $500 million.
The WA market place is a mixture of independent stores and national chains. Entrepreneur Malcolm Day’s adultshop.com operates 13 outlets in Perth.
Mr Day said the stores were doing better than most retailers, but were susceptible to consumer sentiment and the state of the economy. “It’s a misnomer that that type of business makes money under any economic circumstances,” he said.
Mr Day said the company’s outlets benefited from the long- established online store.
